EQUITY RESPONSE TO AGENCY REGULATIONS

In March Equity submitted a response to the BERR Consultation on the Conduct of Employment Agencies Regulations, highlighting that models and artists that undertake walk-on and supporting artists’ engagements within the film and television industry are most at risk of being charged up front fees.

Equity’s priority has been to secure a framework to ensure that our members get the important services they require without fear of exploitation, while supporting the operation of genuine entertainment agents and the continued role of publication and directory services.

POLICING AND CRIME BILL

Equity met with Lib Dem peer Baroness Miller and expressed a number of concerns about the new Policing and Crime Bill.

Equity fears that this legislation aimed at regulating the sex industry will have the consequence of reducing the number of workplaces and jobs available to Equity members and that in the future dancers will potentially be labelled sex workers. Baroness Miller agreed to submit a number of amendments to the Bill representing Equity’s views. A briefing on Equity’s position was circulated to all peers in advance of the House of Lords debate on July 1, 2009.
