Equity and TAC in Welsh Deal

New agreement protects Welsh production

Earlier this year TAC, the body that represents producers of Welsh language television programming, approached Equity noting that the rates of commissioning for programming from S4C – the Welsh language channel – were much lower than those offered to programme makers in the rest of the UK. At the same time, Equity-negotiated pay rates for TAC productions were at a similar level similar to the UK-wide agreements. TAC then made an unacceptable proposal to cut pay rates.

In April and May there were extensive negotiations with members in Wales to discuss a way forward. Members faced the choice of making changes to the TAC agreement or taking industrial action. Equity put forward a proposal based on arrangements negotiated for the production of the BBC Welsh language drama Pobol y Cwm. The deal offered addressed TAC’s concerns while protecting the income of Equity members.

Tough negotiations in June refined the offer and in July Welsh members were invited to one of four open meetings to discuss the deal – which was broadly accepted.

“In addition to the new minimum terms, it was also agreed that Equity and S4C would sign a side letter committing the broadcaster to recognising the validity of the new agreement whether or not the producer is a member of TAC,” Welsh national officer Chris Ryde said. “This is crucial as ensuring compliance with the new deal is as important as agreeing the terms.”
