ARC 2009: EQUITY MEMBERS ON THEATRE BOARDS

Billy McColl moved the motion from the North and East London branch calling on the union to lobby the Arts Councils to appoint Equity members to the board of every theatre and theatre company in receipt of Arts Council funding.

“If we were to have Equity on the boards of theatres we might be taken more seriously, we might help steer decisions into better working conditions, more productions, and add an understanding of creativity,” Billy said. “There is no substitute for knowledge and it might restore the balance and see more productions in theatres.”

He argued that theatre managements have become stifled by bureaucracy, leaving artists out of the equation.

The motion was carried.
