Moving a motion from the Women’s Committee on bias against women in the entertainment industry, Susan McGoun recalled how, in a recent interview Michelle Pfeiffer had wondered whether Tom Cruise would have been asked how he felt about aging in Hollywood at the age of just 35 – as she had.
Pfeiffer’s experiences were not unique. In fact they were reflected in the research done by the International Federation of Actors (FIA). Their report found women dissatisfied with the roles on offer.
But despite numerous negative experiences, Susan said she felt optimistic. “As a result of the report we now have the online Equity petition for the equal representation of men and women in drama production, plus there is the “gender equality duty 2007” – legislation which places a legal obligation on public bodies not just to eliminate unlawful gender discrimination but to promote equality of opportunity between men and women. We are now in a position to challenge the status quo, promote change and offer sophisticated solutions.”
The motion was passed unanimously.
