Models welcomed into Equity
Equity is the UK trade union with more than 75 years' experience of representing performers and other artists. Following approaches from models and the Model Health Report, Equity first opened its doors to models at the end of December 2007 to offer them membership of the union and the support this brings with it.
A dedicated Models Committee exists to foster and promote the interests of models within and outside of the union. This committee is formed of working models who are Equity members and is elected by our Models Register
Equity's work with and for models is developing and the projects we are currently working on include:
- Continuing Discussions with the Association of Model Agents to address models' concerns;
- Working with the British Fashion Council to ensure best practice at London Fashion Week - where Equity is present to talk to models;
- Insuring models for facial and hand disfigurement, public liability, accidents at work and back stage theft.
- Advising models on tax, copyright, and terms and conditions of employment
- Taking up cases where models have not been paid for work done and ensuring payment is made
- Preparing model advice sheets on a range of issues, with the help of members on our Models Register and Dance UK
Models who join the Union are entitled to receive free advice and support from dedicated members of staff. In addition, Equity is working with its models' committee and appropriate external organisations to ensure that new services for models are identified and can be delivered in the future.
REMEMBER - Your membership of Equity is confidential to you and your union and we will not divulge it either your agent or any employer. The more models join Equity, the greater will be your collective voice and the greater will be our achievements in the future.
