UPDATE ON THE SHAKESPEARE DAY PETITION

Where there`s a Will there`s a Day

Members may recall seeing a report in last summer`s Equity Journal about a Petition requesting that “Her Majesty`s Government institute Shakespeare Day on 23rd April 2015 and annually thereafter to celebrate Britain`s national Bard, William Shakespeare”. The Petition, with some 500 signatures, was handed in at no. 10 Downing Street on 24th June 2013 (Midsummer  Day) by Samuel West, accompanied by theatre director Adam Spreadbury-Maher, actors Sheila Mitchell & Mark Holden, and singers Annie Bright & Val Wiseman, aided and abetted at the gates by the London Town Crier Alan Myatt and Shakespeare ‘lookalike’ Charles Neville.

This signalled the launch of the E-Petition which is now online:

If you have already signed it, thank you. If not, please do – and tell your family, friends and colleagues too!

However, this is not the end of the story; EasyJet have decided to boost the Petition and plan to invite a ‘high-profile’ person (associated with Shakespeare) to unveil an image of the Bard on the side of one of their planes. This event will take place around April/May, and EasyJet`s  invaluable marketing will be pitched to their 61 million passengers! This means that with their help it will be possible to reach the target of 100,000 signatures before the Petition comes down at the end of July.
