Equity at the Better Way TUC demonstration in York
11 March 2014
North East Regional Organiser Nigel Jones writes:
Equity was pleased to support the TUC march and demonstration ‘A Better Way’ in York on March 8th. The timing and location coincided with the Liberal Democrat Spring Conference and the purpose was to make clear to the coalition that there is an alternative to austerity, using the arguments which Equity has deployed in support of the campaign ‘My Theatre Matters’.
Both the national and Yorkshire Area Equity banners were proudly paraded and attracted media attention especially from the BBC who featured our banners prominently in their coverage of the event. The banners were carried by Yorkshire Ridings Branch Secretary Pete Keal, Regional Organiser Nigel Jones, Policy Development Officer Max Beckmann from Guild House, and former Yorkshire Ridings Branch Treasurer Yvonne Okyere-Whalley who after making a dazzling and much-appreciated contribution to Equity’s activities in the branch has sadly (for Equity) returned to her native Ghana.
We were joined at the ensuing rally by member Professor Fiddlesticks and one or two performers who enquired about membership. One of the platform speakers was writer, broadcaster and comedian Kate Fox who expressed her pleasure in seeing the Equity banners and will hopefully be joining Equity soon.
