Arts cuts petition

Arts petition

Last year, as Government pressure on arts funders to cuts support for theatres and other arts organisations built, 46 of the UK’s leading performers wrote to the Observer warning that the arts in the United Kingdom were facing the biggest threat in decades from funding cuts at national and local level.

Equity members such as Kenneth Branagh, Jo Brand, Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen wrote an open letter warning that cuts to the arts will affect “not just those working and training in regional theatre, independent arts, the BBC, UK film, festivals, dance or theatre in education, but also those audiences who access the arts and culture through outreach and education programmes, community and youth groups and social care.”

One year later the results of these arts cuts are becoming clear. More than one in ten companies that are losing 100% of their core funding from Arts Council England this week are closing as a result, according to a survey conducted by The Stage.

Equity members need to keep pressure on the Government. Please add your voice to theirs and sign the petition to save the arts from these devasting cuts.
