Equity event at Ideastap

If you want to have your say on Equity’s campaigns and policies, there are several ways to get involved:

Council

The governing body of the union is the Council. Made up of 32 Equity members, there are general councillors as well as those responsible for specialised areas of work and specific regions. The Council meets at least 10 times per year to discuss union policy, campaigns and to vote on motions submitted to them by branches or committees, see below.

Branches

Branches are set up and run by local members and provide an opportunity to meet and discuss issues of common concern. Members can put motions forward to Council through their Branch. Both Equity members and Student members are invited to join their local branch (or whichever branch is convenient for them). See a list of Branches here or contact the Membership Team to find your local branch.

Not able to attend branch meetings in person?  You can meet fellow members online, have discussions about the issues which matter to you and even create motions for Council. To join the Online Branch, log-in to the Members' Area.

Committees

Specialist committees focus on areas of interest and represent their concerns to Equity Council to establish policy and create resources for Equity members. If you have a matter relating to a Committee’s area of work, you can find contact details here.

The easiest way to make your voice heard is to vote in Equity elections. You can stand for election to Equity Council and Committees, or you can cast your vote for a candidate who will fight for the issues you care about. To secure your vote, make sure your address details are always up to date by contacting the Membership Team and stay informed by following our @EquityUK social media channels.

Ambassadors, deputies, equality reps

Members can also get involved as advocates for Equity in workplaces as deputies, ambassadors and equality reps. Find out more here.

Equity Organisers

Full-time union officials make hundreds of workplace visits each year to talk about what the union is doing and discuss the concerns of Equity members. If your production has not had a visit and you would like an Equity Organiser to come along then please contact us.

Still unclear on how the union works? Watch a quick film on our set-up here.
