Former Equity President Nigel Davenport dies

Tributes are being paid to celebrated actor and former Equity President Nigel Davenport who has died aged 85.
During a career spanning more than 50 years, he appeared in such films as A Man for All Seasons and Chariots of Fire and the TV series Howards' Way. He worked in theatre, film and television in productions ranging from Shakespeare to soap operas.
Equity General Secretary Christine Payne has added her voice to the tributes: "As President of the union Nigel was hugely respected by both members and staff. He was very approachable and always ready to hear an alternative view. And of course he was an exceptionally fine actor. His photograph hangs in the Equity Council chamber and next Tuesday when the Council meets we will pay our respects, recall fond memories and give him one final standing ovation."
Nigel, who was President of Equity from 1985 to 1991, died on 25 October.
