Westminster parking charges shelved

15 December 2011

No Parking sign

Equity members are celebrating Westminster Council ‘s decision that extra parking charges in the West End should be delayed until beyond the Olympics.

Christine Payne, Equity General Secretary, said: “This is great news for the West End and particularly performers who are vulnerable when travelling home from work alone late at night. We now call on Westminster Council to realise their mistake and scrap this damaging parking plan.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson added: "It is very important that the West End should be confident and that businesses should not have any extra burdens."

Westminster City Council had decided to extend on-street parking restrictions to midnight from Monday to Saturday and between 1.00pm and 6.00pm on Sundays. This would have a huge impact on those working unsocial hours in the West End, particularly women and more vulnerable workers who have to use their own transport at times when public transport is not running.
