Pussy Riot activists released from prison

23 December 2013

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (left) and Maria Alyokhina of Russian protest band Pussy Riot have both been released from prison this morning after President Putin’s Amnesty Bill came into effect.

The women were jailed in August 2012 after performing a protest song in a Moscow Cathedral and a third protestor, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was also jailed but released on appeal in October 2012.

Equity and its International Committee for Artistic Freedom have campaigned for the women’s release since their arrest, and we are delighted that they have been reunited with their loved ones.

Amnesty International, an organisation Equity is affiliated to, have a timeline showing how their case developed, and the campaigning work behind their release: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/pussy-riot-freed
