Petition launched to save Weymouth Pavilion

18 January 2013

A petition has been launched to try to extend the time local groups have to submit a proposal for running Weymouth Pavilion Theatre.

The building is under threat of closure and possibly demolition after Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, which owns the venue, said it would cost too much to run in the coming years. The council has invited voluntary and private groups to submit business plans for the building, while its own proposals for demolition were being put out to public consultation.

Local campaigners are calling on the council to agree to a notice period of one financial year if it decides to shut the site, so that groups have sufficient time to put together a plan to take over the theatre.

The petition, via www.change.org, has attracted more than 700 signatures and says: “It cannot be right that the community has just one month’s notice to organise themselves to submit a viable proposal with a strong financial plan.”

A spokeswoman for the council said groups were able to submit proposals from December 4, 2012 to January 16, 2013.
