Essex General Branch - Circus Talk
Start:10 February 2018
Time:10:30 for teas/coffee. Talk from 11.00am
LocationUpstairs Hall, Trinity Methodist Church, Chelmsford
We are proud to have secured a fantastic speaker for our branch's contribution to Equity's year of celebration, marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of the circus as we know it.
The multi-talented (actor, renowned ringmaster, playwright and former Equity Circus Councillor) CHRIS BARLTROP, will talk to us in Chelmsford on Saturday February 10 - please note this is the correct date. He is kindly travelling from Herefordshire to be with us, so we respectfully ask that all members do their utmost to attend, arriving 10.45am (refreshments!) for 11am.
This FREE talk is upstairs at Trinity Link opposite The County Hotel, five minutes walk from the station. It will be followed by our branch AGM, so feel free to bring as MANY pals as you like, but only Equity card-holders will be able to stay with us after Chris Barltrop's talk. (But Chelmsford has some lovely shops!). When the meeting itself closes we retire to the County Hotel bar.
Always fascinated by circus history, Chris has researched Philip Astley’s early activities, using his findings to write and perform a one-man performance in which he plays the man behind the legends. The first performance will be on Easter Monday 2018 on the very spot where Astley began 250 years ago. Chris will be talking about his play, "Audacious Mr Astley" and his own career. Questions encouraged!
#ChrisBarltrop became involved with circus by chance, and fell in love with the art-form. He trained for the stage at East 15 Acting School. In the early 70s he took ‘temporary’ work with a travelling circus, and stayed on to become one of Britain’s most respected ringmasters.
High-spots of his career include seven years of touring with the Moscow State Circus, many TV appearances, and taking part in two Royal Variety Performances.
He’s also an advocate for the circus world; Equity’s circus Councillor for 15 years, a former Chairman of what was then the Variety Advisory Committee, and a representative to Government level of the circus community.
