Yorkshire Ridings Branch Newsletter Mar '13

28 February 2013

What Do YOU Want From Your Branch?

This will be a topic for discussion at an extra Branch Meeting that we have organised for March. Please come along on:

Saturday 9 March

12.00 Midday

Priestley Room, West Yorkshire Playhouse
Quarry Hill, Leeds, LS2 7UP

While we are pleased that the last two Branch meetings have been well attended, could your Branch be more relevant over issues you face in your work, or lack of properly paid work even? Should the Branch do more in campaigning against the cuts? Should we support events in other Trades Unions such as the Durham Miners Gala? Would you like the Branch to organise Training Events or members’ socials? We hope you’ll come along and discuss such issues and help the Branch to catch up with other matters that we haven’t had time to discuss at the last two Branch Meetings.

We will be at West Yorkshire Playhouse again this month, but this time the meeting will be on a Saturday. We arrange meetings on different days and times to suit as many members as we can.

Your Branch’s Motion to Equity’s 2013 Annual Representative Conference

At its February meeting Yorkshire Ridings General Branch agreed to submit the following motion to the 2013 ARC:

"This ARC is concerned that the new structure of the Union, with the elimination of the English Area Committees and Specialist Committees including Walk-Ons, disadvantages the many members who relied on these committees to represent their specialist area of work.

This ARC calls upon Council to ensure that these members are not denied a voice in the Union in this way and urges Council to put structures in place to monitor the representation of these groups."

The Branch agreed to submit two further motions on Induction and Training for Branch Officers and Committee members and Election procedure for General Branch Officers to Equity's Council. The full text of these motions can be downloaded at

West Yorkshire Playhouse and Equity

WYP Artistic Director James Brining writes: It was great to welcome the February Branch meeting of Equity to the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Coming home to Leeds has been brilliant; the creative scene in West Yorkshire feels vibrant and full of energy. As I said at the meeting, one of the major differences between my previous theatre, Dundee Rep and the Playhouse is the fact that in Dundee I led a permanent company of actors, many of whom had worked there for 12 years. For me, the presence of actors is of crucial importance in the mix of energies in any theatre. I also value the input of actors based in the area that the theatre is operating in. Over the coming months I will be working with colleagues to develop more opportunities for local actors to be part of the creative life of the Playhouse. At the meeting, I was also asked about discounted tickets and I can confirm that Equity members are eligible to receive £3 off available tickets at the Playhouse on presentation of a valid Equity card. Our production of Dr Faustus previews from 23 Feb and runs ‘til 16 March so it would be great to see you here for that.

I look forward to meeting many of you here over the coming months and years.

Trades Councils Update

Your Branch is now represented on the newly revived Calderdale Trades Council, Doncaster Trades Council and a member has volunteered to represent the Branch on Sheffield Trades Council.

Trades councils bring unions together to campaign on issues affecting people in their workplaces and local communities. Would you be interested in representing Equity on your local Trades Council? We know of Trades Councils in Barnsley, Bradford, East Yorkshire, Huddersfield, Hull, Keighley, Leeds, North Lincolnshire, Rotherham, Scarborough and York and there may be others. We would like to elect delegates to each of these Trades Councils at our March Branch Meeting. If you’re interested in being a Trades Council delegate from your Branch, but can’t get to the meeting on 9 March, please e-mail to let us know.

Future E-Newsletters and Print Newsletters

At the last Branch Meeting it was decided to cease sending printed newsletters to all members. Printed newsletters will now only be sent to members for whom Equity does not have an e-mail address. All other members will be sent E-Newsletters only.

The print version of the Newsletter will continue to be uploaded to the Documents section of the Branch Web Site as will a Large Print version.

If you aren’t receiving E-Newsletters and would like to, please e-mail and we will arrange this.
