West & South West London Branch

Welcome to the West and South West London Branch webpage!

Here you can find our monthly branch newsletters and the minutes of each of our branch meetings.

Our Branch Mission Statement

The West and South West London branch of Equity works hard all year round to bring about change and make improvements to the treatment of our union’s members working in all areas of the creative industries.

The branch remains mindful of its ongoing duty to be inclusive of members from all backgrounds to serve and represent the diverse pool of people working the arts as fairly and accurately as possible. The branch proudly promotes Equity’s work and benefits among non-member colleagues and it strives to work towards the creation of safe spaces, free of bullying or intimidation for members.

Beyond this, we are committed to finding ways to encourage members to maximise the possibilities that come with joining our brilliant branch. These include:

  • Opportunities to be involved in the general running and activism of the branch.
  • Attending monthly branch meetings.
  • Using the meetings to raise and discuss topics which are important to you.
  • Socialising with like-minded members in the bar after the meetings!
  • Meeting and working with fellow members through our monthly play readings.
  • Hearing from a range of exciting industry professional guest speakers.
  • Access to regular workshops, readings and audition days run solely for our branch members.
  • Voting for the committee members you want to represent you.

The West and South West London branch is one of the biggest, busiest and most active within the union. We are determined to help our members grow and succeed in their chosen path in an industry that is respectful of its members’ talents and needs. We want to enable our members to be part of a community which brings about the changes we all want to see in our industry.

Audition Days
Audition days are a great opportunity for members to make new contacts with high profile industry people, including directors, casting directors and producers from the worlds of TV, theatre and film. Past audition day hosts have included former National Theatre casting director Wendy Spon, film producer Lyndon Baldock of Templeheart Films, CDG casting director Victor Jenkins and theatre director Jessica Lazar.
To find out more about the Audition Days, email auditions.equity.wswlon@gmail.com
Play Readings
The branch runs regular play reading sessions where members are invited to take part in reading a wide range of classic and contemporary texts.
To find out about upcoming readings, email Abigail Matthews and James Somerset at wswplayreading@gmail.com to request to be added to the play readings mailing list.
Rehearsed Readings
We run regular Rehearsed Readings of new writing. These are a great chance for our members to be a part of the development of scripts that are finished but have yet to be performed, and to work with creative teams who might eventually be casting their plays. We have worked with Jack Paterson, Diana Nneka Atuona (George Devine Award Winner) and Mahad Ali (Bruntwood Prize Longlist). The branch has also worked on a number of translations of new plays by international playwrights, such as David Paquet and Rébecca Déraspe.
There is no mailing list for the Rehearsed Readings as they are cast as needed, but please direct any questions to rr.equitywswlondon@gmail.com
Every month, we welcome a guest speaker to our branch meetings. These speakers are often key inspirational experts in their respective fields and always incredibly interesting. Recent speakers include actor Ian McKellen, producer Jessica Malik and script supervisor Emma Thomas. Details of upcoming speakers are always included in our monthly newsletters.
Workshops are a great way for members to keep themselves busy and up to date with what is going on in our industry should they find themselves between jobs. Over the last few years the West and South West London branch have been very lucky to welcome numerous workshops with hosts including Simon Godwin (Associate Director of the National Theatre, soon to be Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington), theatre director Bijan Sheibani and casting director of the CDG, Sarah Hughes.
To find out more about the workshops, email equity.wswlon.workshops@gmail.com

For more information, keep an eye out for your monthly branch newsletters which are kept updated with all upcoming workshop and audition day opportunities. Alternatively, see our contacts page for useful contact information.

The West and South West London Equity Branch generally meet on the second Wednesday of the month at the 7 Dials Club in Covent Garden.
