Equity at Tolpuddle Martys Festival

Following a two year hiatus due to the Pandemic, Equity will be returning to Tolpuddle Martys Festival this year bigger and better on 15-17 July 2022.

As a joyful celebration of solidarity, the festival has gathered annually to mark the story of the Tolpuddle Martys since the 1930s. Tolpuddle has been a place of great importance to the Labour Movement from the moment news broke of the harsh sentences imposed on the six farm workers who led the formation of the union.

Today, the annual event sees thousands of trade unionists from around the UK and the world descend on the small village of Tolpuddle in Dorset to celebrate the memory of the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the legacy they left behind.

The Festival kicks off midday on Friday as campers arrive in Tolpuddle to experience a weekend of talks and live music into the night.

Equity will be in the Rear Garden Organise Tent on the Saturday as Equity’s Equality Officer Ian Manborde chairs a panel on Organising Precarious Workers from 3.30 - 4.30pm. Featuring Paul Fleming Equity General Secretary, Naomi Pohl Musicians’ Union General Secretary, Dawn Hope Equity member and actor on Hollyoaks and Gareth Spencer President PCS Culture Group.

On Sunday, the tiny village of Tolpuddle gets even more visitors as they arrive to take part in the big procession to commemorate the Martyrs.

If you can’t make the trip to Tolpuddle make sure you have a look on Equity’s socials as our staff will be documenting the event.
