Donations appeal for statue of Joan Littlewood
7 November 2013
Joan Littlewood is to be commemorated with a bronze statue outside Theatre Royal Stratford East, the London venue she made her own.
The Theatre Workshop company started work in Stratford in1953 and became famous for productions such as Oh What a Lovely War, Mother Courage and Her Children and Fings Ain’t Wot they Used T’Be.
So far, more than 50% of the funds required for the project have already been raised, with the final £120,000 going out to a public appeal. The statue will be based on the iconic photograph of Littlewood, left, sitting on rubble outside the theatre in the 1970s, at a time when the venue faced the threat of demolition.
