Equity statement on Quentin Letts’ RSC review
9 April 2018
Christine Payne, General Secretary of Equity, has responded to Quentin Letts' review of The Fantastic Follies of Mrs Rich.
Christine Payne said:
"Quentin Letts' review of The Fantastic Follies of Mrs Rich reflects an ignorant and woefully outdated view of inclusive casting. Mr Letts may disagree with a casting decision, but to link this to the race of the actor is unacceptable. Equity is in complete support of the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC) inclusive casting approach. An increasingly diverse audience both wants and expects to see and hear itself reflected across the whole of the entertainment industry and the RSC is a fantastic example of putting this principle into practice on stage."
