Sign the National Shakespeare Day petition
30 September 2013
At noon on Midsummer's Day, 24June, Equity Council member Samuel West and friends handed a petition to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street requesting “that Her Majesty`s Government institute Shakespeare Day on 23 April 2015 and annually thereafter to celebrate Britain`s national bard, William Shakespeare.”
The petitioners (left to right actress Sheila Mitchell, Artistic Director of the Kings Head Theatre Adam Spreadbury-Maher, singer Annie Bright, Samuel West, Equity Minority Ethnic Members' Councillor Mark Holden, town cryer Alan Myatt and Shakespeare lookalike Charles Neville, will be launching an on-line Downing Street petition to get 100,000 signatures which will mean there must be a Commons debate on the issue.
Next year, 2014, will be the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare`s birth, and 2016 will be the 400th anniversary of his death.
At its meeting in June the Equity Council backed the campaign.
