TUC supports My Theatre Matters!
3 October 2013
The 2013 TUC Congress, held in Bournemouth in September, backed the My Theatre Matters! campaign launched by Equity, the Theatrical Management Association and The Stage. The campaign aims to mobilise audiences in support of local council funding of theatres.
Equity President Malcolm Sinclair proposed Equity’s motion, which had been brought together with a motion from BECTU on arts funding. He told the Congress that the national arts budget has been cut by over 30% since 2010 and that in some areas — Westminster and Somerset — arts funding by the Councils has been cut by 100%. He said that thousands of supporters and 130 theatres had already signed up to My Theatre Matters! “Without public investment many regional theatres would probablynot survive at all. This would be devastating — not only is theatre a valued part of our comm unities, it makes our town and city centres better, livelier places and boosts local economies.”
