TV bursary for theatre directors

20 November 2013

creative skillsetExperienced theatre directors interested in working in television are invited to apply to the £3,500 David Fraser/Andrea Wonfor Bursary to work with top UK broadcasters and production companies.

Set up to ensure that the brightest and best theatre directors have the opportunity to direct British TV, the three-month programme is supported by the UK's major broadcasters and independent production companies and by Creative Skillset.

BBC, ITV, Channel 4, All3media and Shed Productions take it in turns to provide training in the techniques of directing multi-camera drama for television. The bursary holder initially shadows an experienced director of a long-running drama serial and then takes increasing levels of responsibility. They then direct one episode with supervision. Many of British television's most successful directors have been trained this way.

The David Fraser/Andrea Wonfor Bursary is named in memory of two inspirational leaders during a time of huge change in British television. Previous recipients of the bursary have worked on long-running drama serials such as Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street.

David Liddiment, Creative Director, All3media, said: The David Fraser/Andrea Wonfor Bursary offers our most gifted theatre directors the chance to develop TV-specific techniques and work with a range of broadcast and production companies. Given this proven format it really is an exceptional opportunity for talented theatre directors

Applicants must have a strong track record of middle scale work they have directed in subsidised or commercial theatre and be at mid-career stage in their development as a theatre director.

The application deadline is 31 December 2013 and the programme will take place in autumn 2014.
