WNO chorus "concerned" at ENO cuts

4 March 2016

The Chorus of Welsh National Opera has expressed "grave concern and regret" at the plan by English National Opera management to reduce ENO chorus from full-time to just nine months a year.

An open letter to Harry Brünjes, Chairman of ENO Board, and Cressida Pollack, Chief Executive, reads: "A full-time chorus performs a vital role within an opera company beyond its obvious function of singing opera choruses on stage in front of a paying audience. Used properly and effectively a full-time chorus provides a permanent resource for filling certain of the roles in an opera and for covering many others. Full-time choristers, along with their full-time orchestra colleagues, are also available to perform in concerts, undertake education and outreach work and act as ambassadors for an opera company in a way that no other group possibly can."
