Equity meeting in Bath - Guest speaker Phoebe Kemp

Start:22 March 2018

Time:19:30 - 21:30 (followed by socialising in a nearby pub)

LocationNatural Theatre Company's studio; Widcombe Institute, Widcombe Hill, Bath, BA2 6AA

All Equity members are invited to Bath for the next meeting of the Equity Bristol & West General Branch.

After successful outreach meetings in Frome and Cheltenham, to better engage with members throughout the region, our next meeting will be held in the Natural Theatre Company's studio; Widcombe Institute, Widcombe Hill, Bath, BA2 6AA (see map here).

The meeting will be held on Thursday 22nd March; 7:30pm – 9:30pm (PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE; this is a change from our usual Tuesday night slot).

We welcome all Equity members to this meeting, particularly those who may not have attended one of the branch meetings before. This is a chance to engage with your union on a local level, and for the branch to get a better picture of the issues in your region, or that affect your careers. After the meeting, we will share a drink in a local bar or pub, so this is also a great opportunity to socialise and network.

This month, we are pleased to welcome Phoebe Kemp as our guest speaker.

Phoebe Kemp is an actor and workshop facilitator based just outside Bath. As a performer and practitioner, she has worked with companies including Wyldwood Arts, Nottingham Playhouse, Butterfly Psyche Theatre, The Ruffled Umbrella Company, Taking Flight Theatre Company and Just Enough Theatre Company.

Phoebe is currently touring in MAY. This one-woman show, which is written and performed by Phoebe, is based on the life of disabled, bisexual, suffragette May Billinghurst.

Phoebe is also Creative Producer of Natural Diversions; a street theatre company that exclusively employs disabled performers, and a branch of the world famous Natural Theatre Company.

Phoebe is Chair of Equity Deaf and Disabled Members Committee (DDMC). The DDMC advises the Equity Council and takes action on any equal opportunities matters and discrimination on the grounds of disability relevant to the professional employment of Equity members.

Minutes from the last branch meeting on February 20th can be downloaded here. These include notes from the discussion on local theatre casting. These minutes will be approved during the meeting in Bath. Please peruse these minutes in advance of the next meeting, and bring any questions/comments along with you. We are trying to cut down on paper, so will only have limited physical copies available at the meeting.

The Natural Theatre Company studio is accessible by stairs or by lift.

Following enquiries from branch members, we are investigating whether it is viable to employ a British Sign Language interpreter at this meeting. If you are a BSL user, and feel you may like to attend this meeting, please get in touch.

As a branch we do not have access to data of how many branch members would benefit from this, or what other various access needs our members have. We are determined to ensure that our meetings are accessible, and that no member feels hindered from attending at least one meeting within the year. Therefore to get a clearer picture, we ask those with accessibility issues to contact the committee in confidence with how we may be able to help to allow you to attend. We will do our best to accommodate anyone's needs if possible.

At the meeting there will be a report from the recent meeting with Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees, regarding Bristol City Council's Arts Funding cuts. Please bring along any other matters you would like to discuss, or email them to us.
