Union backs plan to boost offstage diversity

Stage Sight is a new campaign set up to widen the diversity of the workforce in offstage roles. These roles include many represented by Equity, including stage management and the creative team. Stage Sight aims to encourage those with protected characteristics who are under-represented backstage, so the entertainment industry can more accurately reflect society. The campaign was set up by lighting designer Prema Mehta and is supported by a range of employer bodies, drama schools and industry trade associations.

Equity agreed to support the campaign following a proposal put to the union’s Council by stage management Councillor Adam Burns. He said: “Stage Sight’s aim is to look at ways of making the profession more attractive to more diverse groups given the perception of it being low paid and in an era of high tuition fees. The campaign’s core aims are reaching out, recruitment and alternative pathways.” The Council agreed to provide £5,000 funding. For more, email adam@adamburns.co.uk
