Equity’s LGBT+ Committee, in collaboration with All About Trans and Spotlight, has published a new set of industry guidelines for working with LGBT+ performers and creative professionals.
There is currently a lack of representation of the LGBT+ community in the arts in general, and of the trans community in particular. This guide seeks to empower the industry to begin to redress the balance so we can build on enjoying greater diversity and representation on our screens, stages and audio platforms. The launch event took place at the National Theatre on 28 October, with an invited audience of casting professionals.
Equity LGBT+ Committee member Tigger Blaize said, “We are really excited about launching our guide. It’s designed to be a toolkit of ideas, encouraging industry professionals to feel confident in approaching performers who identify as LGBT+, if they were previously unsure.”
Equity member Harrison Knights added, “As a member of Equity I see the guide as offering an important opportunity to create fairness in the casting process for trans performers.
“I hope this event helps disseminate the guide to as wide an audience as possible, and look forward to greater representation of trans performers across the entertainment industry.”
Alastair Coomer, head of casting at the National Theatre said, “The National Theatre has welcomed the opportunity to support Equity in the production of the LGBT+ casting guide.
“It represents a key achievement in reinforcing the industry’s commitment to ensure casting is as fair, open and accessible a process as possible. I look forward to working with other casting professionals in sharing awareness and understanding of how to use the guide in practice.”
