The inaugural Black British Theatre Awards were held on 27 October, as part of Black History Month. The awards have been established to raise the profile of the role that black Britons have made to not only this country’s artistic legacy, but the impact that their contribution has made internationally.
Equity sponsored three awards: Best Dance Performance in a Dance Production – won by Prentice Whitlow for Rite of Spring; Set Design Recognition Award – won by Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey for her body of work; Lifetime Recognition Award – won by Sharon D. Clarke.
Equity was represented at the awards by Assistant General Secretary Matt Hood alongside Councillors Maureen Hibbert, Linden Walcott-Burton and Dawn Hope. Matt Hood said, “It was a real privilege to be at the first Black British Theatre Awards. Such an immense wealth of talent and passion – and a long overdue recognition. I’m really looking forward to working with the awards team going forward as we push for a fully inclusive industry.”
