We are arguing the case for entertainment workers to the highest levels of government; this includes for an income guarantee over the coming months. You can join in with our campaigning work by following the steps below:
LOSS OF INCOME
Ask your MP to support EDM 302 tabled by Kevin Brennan MP https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/56765/temporary-universal-basic-income
- That this House calls on the Government to introduce a temporary universal basic income or an emergency measure to help freelancers and the self-employed effected by the covid-19 outbreak.
The best way to contact MPs at the moment is via Twitter: https://tweetyourmp.com/ and there is also https://www.mysociety.org/wehelpyou/contact-your-mp/
CALL FOR A RESCUE PACKAGE FOR THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
You can call on the Chancellor to provide a rescue package for the creative industries and to provide an income guarantee for creative workers, again by tweeting @RishiSunak or emailing CEU.email@example.com
Sample wording that you can tailor to their own situation:
Equity represents nearly 50,000 people working across the creative industries – including actors, theatre directors and designers, stage management, dancers, singers, live entertainment workers and a range of other professions in film, television production, the music and video games industries, theatres, pubs, clubs and anywhere else entertainment happens including schools, care homes, cruise ships and many other venues.
We need your help to tackle the hardship that will be faced by self-employed workers in this country.
Our members are some of the most resilient and entrepreneurial workers in the economy but overnight the core work they do – in theatre especially – has disappeared. The alternative employment that many of them rely on – working as office temps, running workshops in schools, corporate roleplay, one off gigs in care homes etc - to pay the bills is also disappearing rapidly.
We really need your help now to provide reassurance to our members and their families. Please talk to my union about what our sector needs.
CALL FOR CHANGES TO UNIVERSAL CREDIT DURING THIS CRISIS
Universal Credit needs urgent revision in order to meet the needs of creative workers at this time. What we need:
- Scrap Minimum Income Floor during the coronavirus crisis as it is causing immense hardship to freelancers who have little or no income.
- Call on the government to look at how the gainful self-employment test is being applied during this period as it is clear from the DWP’s own guidance that claimants should not be viewed as gainfully self-employed where there is no reasonable prospect of work in the near future
- Make universal credit advances a grant rather than a loan
