Take action and stand in solidarity with education workers

Equity's President Maureen Beattie and General Secretary Paul W Fleming have issued the following statement, appealing to members to sign a petition calling for schools and colleges to move to online learning until it is safe for them to return.

As the President and General Secretary of Equity, we are appealing to all our 48,000 members to stand in solidarity with education unions calling for schools to return only when it is safe to do so. We ask them all to sign the following petition from the National Education Union (NEU) and Unison which calls on the government to take this sensible and long overdue action.

Our members will only be able to return to work creating art and entertainment in venues from theatres to schools to village halls and care homes when this pandemic has passed. It is clear that the only way to stop that spread, and halt the needless exposure of teachers and support staff to unnecessary harm, is to keep schools closed.

Equity members are parents and carers who trust their fellow trades unionists to make the right calls not just for their workplaces, but for children’s education. We trust the voices of nurses, doctors, and support staff who are watching our NHS struggle with the latest wave.

As they have stood with us as we demand proper support for our industries, and meaningful support for the self employed, so we now stand with them.’
