Equity has agreed a code of conduct with Sheffield based professional wrestling organisation Spirit Wrestling. The code sets out terms and conditions for performers, staff and management in writing, provides a dignity at work policy, and allows time and access for performers to engage with the union. This will be supported by an agreed formal disciplinary and grievance policy.
Building a safe arena
Over the past few years #SpeakingOut movement has revealed widespread concerns over harassment and bullying behaviour in the wrestling industry. The absence of an overarching committee or trade body representing promotors has meant that the industry has seen huge extremes of behaviour. Spirit Wrestling joins a growing number of wrestling promoters across the country who have signed up with Equity’s pledges in the sector, improving conditions for all participants.
Dominic Bascombe, Equity’s Regional Official for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside said:
"We are delighted to reach this agreement with Spirit Wrestling a step towards building a safe arena for those working in the wrestling industry and the many supporters and enthusiasts. This agreement puts in place best practice for the industry and ensures that workers’ views are listened to and concerns can be properly addressed.”
Sam McKinstrie of Spirit Wrestling said:
“On behalf of the team, we’re extremely pleased to reach this agreement with Equity, and do our part in creating a safe environment for our performers to be able to do what they do best. We encourage others to also engage with Equity and work towards creating an industry we can be confident of and take pride in” .
