Following our demo on 22 May, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Leeds, has decided to reverse its decision to lay off employees. Four employees (comprising two dancers and two creatives) will no longer be laid off from June 2022 to January January 2023 as was previously planned.

Yesterday (Saturday 21 May) we held a rally calling on the Government to stop the privatisation of Channel 4. Starting with a demo, around 50 Equity members brought placards and chants straight to the doorstep of Channel 4’s national headquarters in Leeds at 6.15pm yesterday. This was followed by a rally at Leeds Corn Exchange, which featured speakers such as the Shadow Culture Secretary Lucy Powell and Hollyoaks actress Dawn Hope, as well as representatives from an independent production company based in the North of England and the campaign group We Own It.

We have today (12 May) published a global scoping review of 111 academic studies related to mental health and wellbeing in students and professionals within the performing arts. This landmark study was commissioned by Equity. It’s launched alongside a new Mental Health Charter at a panel event to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

Max is a Bristol born, London based Production, Set and Costume Designer who graduated from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2001. He is a winner of The Linbury Biennial Prize for Stage Design, and throughout a 20-year freelance career has designed for productions across the UK and abroad. Max is currently a member of SBTD, Bectu and Equity, and sat on the Equity Directors and Designers committee between 2019-2021. Max is also a founder member of Scene/Change.

Equity members working on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella were told on Sunday 1 May that the show will end on 12 June. Not only was the news shared on a Sunday before a bank holiday – meaning those affected could not contact their agent for support – but we understand that some cast members and stage management heard the news first through social media or the press. This is unacceptable - all creative workers deserve to be treated with dignity at work.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we have sent messages of solidarity and offers of help to performers and artists in the country and those affiliated with it. On 24 February, Equity General Secretary Paul W Fleming wrote to the President of the Cultural Workers of Ukraine, Lyudmyla Perelygina. The letter includes an offer to support their members wherever we can, whether directly or through campaigning and lobbying.
