Trans rights in performing arts

In April, the Supreme Court ruled that trans women are not women according to the Equality Act. Equity responded with deep concern and solidarity, committing to defend trans people in the workplace and all walks of life.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has since issued trans exclusionary interim guidance for how organisations should respond to this ruling. There is currently a consultation on this guidance open until 30 June, at some point after which the EHRC will issue their final guidance. Alarmingly some organisations have already begun excluding trans people from the toilets which match their gender and Equity has issued its own guidance on trans inclusion

Register here to join Equity’s LGBT Committee and Student Deputies Committee to learn more about what this means for trans people and all of us in the performing arts. We will discuss how to respond and submit a response to the EHRC consultation together.

You can find more information and resources about organising for trans rights as a worker and how to fill in the consultation here.

Please note that this meeting will follow Equity’s safe spaces policy, and that Equity has a zero tolerance to any form of bullying or harassment of members.
