Equity has called for a "visionary" new Director General to lead the BBC, following the resignation of Tim Davie amid a crisis of confidence over the corporation’s editorial standards.
Davie announced his resignation today (9 November 2025) following mounting criticism of the BBC’s impartiality and leadership, including revelations about editorial failings in its Panorama coverage. BBC Head of News Deborah Turness also resigned, leaving two senior positions to fill. Davie's departure comes as the broadcaster prepares for Charter renewal in 2027, a crucial moment for the future of public service broadcasting.
The Director General must advocate for a strong, independent BBC which showcases the very best of British talent across news, drama, documentaries and storytelling.
Paul W Fleming, Equity General Secretary
Commenting on the resignation, Equity General Secretary Paul W Fleming, said:
"Equity members need a visionary new Director General who is a leader and not a follower as we go into Charter renewal. The Director General must advocate for a strong, independent BBC which showcases the very best of British talent across news, drama, documentaries and storytelling.
"It's important that our flagship public service broadcaster is trusted by audiences and the British public."
The BBC is the biggest commissioner of creative content in the UK and plays a vital part in creating and sustaining jobs for Equity members as well as bringing homegrown talent and unique storytelling to audiences across the UK.
