Equity members from across the country joined tens of thousands who hit the streets of Durham on 12 July for Durham Miners Gala 2025, the largest annual gathering of trade unionist in the UK.
Also known as “The Big Meeting”, the gala celebrates trade union collectivism, solidarity and working-class life, bringing together mining communities, trade unions and associated groups.
The Equity banner joined dozens of others in the historic pit banner procession, in which trade union banners are proudly marched through the city centre as brass bands play. This year three new banners were blessed in Durham Cathedral, as is traditional for any new banners. It was also the first time that Pride were designated a block at the parade.
Speakers at the Gala included Dr Husam Zomlot, Palestinian ambassador to the UK since 2018; Stephen Guy, Chairman of the Durham Miners’ Association, and Jeremy Corbyn MP.
Fiona Tobin, Equity organiser for North East Yorkshire and Humberside, sad:
“It was brilliant to see so many Equity members join together with other trade unionists from across the UK. Equity are committed to our continued presence at the Big Meeting which has grown year-on-year and we encourage all our members to attend this wonderful event of solidarity.”
Equity will hold its national conference in Durham in May 2026.
