Last month Equity addressed independent theatre managers on the topic of fair dispute resolution in the sector. Adam Adnyana, Equity Assistant General Secretary for Live Performance, joined a panel of trade unionists and theatre representatives to discuss the subject at the Independent Theatre Council’s (ITC) September conference.

The session aimed to highlight ways management can deal with workplace issues with a focus on good employment practices and centring trade union engagement, ensuring it’s a fair and transparent process for the affected workforce. Adam was joined on the panel by Caroline Hemmington from sister creative union Bectu, as well as ITC’s Chief Executive Charlotte Jones and Nadia Ruiz, ITC’s Legal & Industrial Relations Manager.

Equity is recognised by and holds important collective agreements with ITC, which guarantee minimum rates and conditions across the independent theatre sector. The agreements also set out dispute resolution processes. ITC is a management association and membership body for performing arts venues, companies and producers across the UK.

The theme of the conference was The Art of Good Employment, with ITC members exploring what it means to be a good employer and how to create fairer, sustainable workplaces across the sector.

Equity’s recognition through our collective agreement with the Independent Theatre Council (ITC) is an important element of our industrial work in the sector. Being invited to play a key role in the ITC annual conference, meant the union could speak directly to employers and engagers, emphasising the importance of good work practices and reconfirming the central status of Equity in processes such as dispute resolution.
