Equity has expressed "disappointment" following the announcement that the reopening of Oldham Coliseum will be delayed to 2027. Union officials met with management recently, and despite the longer than hoped closure, added that Equity wants "to work constructively towards this much-loved venue being fully functioning next year."
The theatre was saved from closure in 2024 following a community campaign, which included Equity. It was originally set to reopen in 2025, then for panto season later this year. However, Oldham Council have updated this week that due to unexpected structural issues, the ongoing refurbishment will take longer, meaning the reopening will now take place in 2027. In the meantime, shows are due to be put on in other venues.
Responding to the news, Equity’s North West Official, Karen Lockney, said:
“Equity is disappointed to learn that the reopening of Oldham Coliseum will now not be until 2027. However, we understand the need to ensure the building is safe and fit for purpose. The union has met with the Chief Executive recently and will maintain regular contact, ensuring we can keep our members informed of progress.
“We appreciate that the Coliseum will produce shows at other Oldham venues in the coming months, providing work for artists and re-establishing a presence in the community. Equity will continue holding the Coliseum’s management to account on behalf of our members, but hope to work constructively towards this much-loved venue being fully functioning next year, producing shows which reflect the community it serves.”
