Green New Deal advocates aim to tackle the twin issues of climate crisis and economic injustice – which we believe to be interlinked – by focusing on industrial and financial policy, the creation of secure green jobs and addressing global inequality.

With the Government set to confirm a four-week delay to the lifting of Covid restrictions, those who work in live performance are worried about what this will mean for their livelihoods. If social distancing and the current 50% audience capacity limit at venues remains in place, the lack of financial viability means many establishments will stay closed. In turn, workers and Equity members will not have jobs to go to. While he says "there's no dispute that public health comes first", Equity General Secretary, Paul W Fleming, has called the Government's approach "a catastrophic blow to Equity’s members and their live performance workplaces".

This week saw the hopeful reopening of performance venues and events, with workers and audiences alike delighted by the return of live acts. Yet this comes alongside concerns about the new Covid-19 variant and the prospect of rising infection rates. With there being the possibility of renewed restrictions, Equity General Secretary, Paul W Fleming, has called for "the Government to consolidate the broken benefits system" to protect the performing arts and entertainment industry and its workers.

Equity has a long, and proud history of standing up for peace and justice around the world – including in Palestine. Violence directed against ordinary working people in both Israel and Palestine is appalling, and it is to be condemned by our movement. The disproportionate actions of the current Israeli government over the past few weeks, both in the policing of Jerusalem and toward Gaza, are particularly horrifying. We stand in solidarity with Palestinians taking industrial action, and workers around the world taking action in support of them.
